How to Calculate Square Yards

Square yards measure area — the space inside a two-dimensional shape. To find square yards from feet, multiply length × width, then divide by 9.

Formula

Square yards = (Length in ft × Width in ft) ÷ 9

If your measurements are in inches, divide by 1,296 (36 × 36) instead. If in yards already, just multiply length × width directly.

How do I calculate square yards?

Multiply length by width in feet, then divide by 9, since one square yard is 9 square feet. An 18 by 14 ft room is 252 sq ft, and 252 divided by 9 is 28 square yards. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles, add their square footage, then divide the total by 9.

How many square yards is a 12 x 15 room?

A 12 by 15 ft room is exactly 20 square yards. Its area is 12 x 15 = 180 square feet, and 180 divided by 9 square feet per square yard equals 20. Carpet for that room should be ordered with 10 to 15% extra, so plan on buying about 22 to 23 square yards.
