How to Calculate Flooring

Measure your room's length and width in feet, multiply them together, then add a waste factor for cuts and mistakes. The formula: Flooring Needed = Length × Width × (1 + Waste %).

Step-by-Step Measuring

  1. Measure wall to wall (not baseboard to baseboard) — flooring goes under baseboards
  2. Use the widest points if walls aren't perfectly straight
  3. For non-rectangular rooms, break into smaller rectangles and add them together
  4. Include closets, alcoves, and hallways
  5. Add your waste factor to the total

Waste Factor Guidelines

  • 5%: Simple rectangular rooms
  • 10%: Standard rooms with some cuts (most common)
  • 15%: Complex layouts with many corners
  • 20%: Diagonal or herringbone patterns

Example: 12×14 Living Room

  • Area: 12 × 14 = 168 sq ft
  • With 10% waste: 168 × 1.10 = 185 sq ft needed
  • At 20 sq ft per box: 185 ÷ 20 = 10 boxes (round up)
  • Laminate at $5/sq ft: 185 × $5 = $925 materials

Flooring Type Comparison

  • Laminate: $4-14/sq ft installed. Easy DIY click-lock install. Not waterproof — avoid in bathrooms
  • Vinyl Plank (LVP): $4-10/sq ft installed. Waterproof, durable, works in any room
  • Hardwood: $15-30/sq ft installed. Adds home value, can be refinished. Avoid in high-moisture areas
  • Tile: $5-15/sq ft installed. Best for bathrooms and kitchens. Professional install recommended
  • Carpet: $3-11/sq ft installed. Comfortable underfoot but harder to clean

Buying Tips

  • Most laminate and vinyl plank comes in boxes covering 20-26 sq ft — always round up
  • Buy all your flooring from the same production lot to ensure consistent color
  • Keep 1-2 extra boxes for future repairs — matching discontinued products is difficult
  • Acclimate flooring in the room for 48 hours before installation to prevent expansion gaps
  • Factor in underlayment cost ($0.25-0.75/sq ft) if not already attached to the planks

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra flooring should I order?

10% extra is standard. Order 15-20% for diagonal patterns or complex room layouts.

How do I calculate flooring for multiple rooms?

Calculate each room separately, add them together, then add waste percentage to the total.

What size boxes does flooring come in?

Most laminate and vinyl plank comes in boxes covering 20 sq ft. Tile boxes vary by size.

Should I include closets in my measurement?

Yes. Measure all floor space including closets, alcoves, and hallways.

What is underlayment and do I need it?

Underlayment is a thin layer (foam, cork, or felt) installed under flooring. Most laminate and vinyl plank requires it for cushion, sound dampening, and minor subfloor irregularity. Solid hardwood typically goes directly on the subfloor.

How do I calculate extra material for a diagonal layout?

Measure the room area normally, then add 20% for waste. A room with 180 sq ft and a diagonal plank pattern needs 180 times 1.20 = 216 sq ft of material to cover the extra cuts at every wall edge.

What is the most common ordering mistake?

Buying exactly the net square footage with no waste buffer. Cuts, defective planks, and future repairs all require extra stock. Order at least 10% above the net area, and keep spare pieces from the same dye lot.

Does flooring go under door frames?

Yes. Flooring should slide under door casings rather than butting up to them. Undercut the casing with a handsaw before installation for a cleaner look and to avoid visible gaps at doorways.
