How to Calculate Slope Percentage

Slope percentage (also called percent grade) compares vertical rise to horizontal run:

Grade (%) = (rise ÷ run) × 100

Rise and run must be in the same unit before dividing — the calculator converts mixed units (say, inches of rise over feet of run) for you. The same slope can be written three ways:

  • Percent: 8.33% — rises 8.33 units per 100 units of run
  • Angle: 4.76° — the incline measured from horizontal, angle = arctan(rise ÷ run)
  • Ratio: 1:12 — one unit of rise per 12 units of run

Measuring Rise and Run in the Field

For short distances — a ramp, patio, or driveway apron — rest a level on the surface, raise one end until the bubble centers, and measure the gap underneath: the gap is the rise and the level's length is the run. For longer ground slopes, use a line level on a taut string between two stakes, or a phone clinometer app for a quick angle reading (this calculator converts the angle to percent for you).

  • Drainage minimum: 1–2% (¼ in per ft) for patios, pipes, and grading away from foundations
  • ADA cross slope max: 2% on accessible routes
  • Walkway limit: 5% — steeper than this and it must be built as a ramp

  • Interstate highway max: 6% sustained; mountain roads reach 7–10%
  • Driveway comfort limit: 10–12%; most codes cap at ~15%

Worked Example

You are building a ramp to a porch that sits 18 inches above grade, and you have 20 feet of room for the run:

  1. Convert to one unit: 18 in = 1.5 ft
  2. Slope = rise ÷ run = 1.5 ÷ 20 = 0.075
  3. Grade = 0.075 × 100 = 7.5%
  4. Angle = arctan(0.075) = 4.3°; ratio = 1 : 13.3

At 7.5% the ramp is under the 8.33% ADA maximum, so 20 feet of run is enough — though a gentler 1:16 (6.25%) would need 24 feet.

How do I calculate slope percentage?

Divide the rise (vertical change) by the run (horizontal distance), then multiply by 100. A ramp that rises 1 foot over 12 feet of run has a slope of 1 ÷ 12 × 100 = 8.33%.

What is a 2% slope in inches per foot?

A 2% slope falls 2 feet per 100 feet, which is about 1/4 inch per foot (0.24 in). It is the standard minimum fall for drainage on patios, walkways, and pipes.

What slope percentage is ADA compliant for ramps?

The ADA maximum running slope for a wheelchair ramp is 8.33%, a 1:12 ratio — 1 inch of rise per 12 inches of run. Cross slope must not exceed 2%.

How steep is a 10% grade?

A 10% grade rises 10 feet for every 100 feet of horizontal distance, an angle of about 5.7°. Roads this steep usually carry warning signs and trucks are advised to use low gear.

Is a 45-degree slope the same as 100%?

Yes. At 45° the rise equals the run, so slope = 1 and grade = 100%. Percent grade keeps growing past 100% as the angle approaches 90°, where it becomes infinite.

How do I convert slope percentage to degrees?

Angle = arctan(grade ÷ 100). For example, a 25% grade is arctan(0.25) = 14.04°. Going the other way, grade = tan(angle) × 100.

What does a 1:20 slope mean?

A 1:20 ratio means 1 unit of rise per 20 units of run — a 5% grade or about 2.9°. It is the steepest a pedestrian walkway can be before it legally counts as a ramp under ADA rules.

What is the maximum slope for a driveway?

Most municipalities cap driveways around 12–15% grade. Above 15% vehicles risk scraping, and icy conditions make the driveway hard to use; 10% or less is comfortable.

What slope do I need for yard drainage?

Grade the ground away from a foundation at about 2% minimum — roughly 1/4 inch per foot, or 6 inches of fall over the first 10 feet. Swales and pipes typically use 1–2%.

Can slope percentage be negative?

Yes — a negative grade simply means downhill in the direction of travel. Road signs state the absolute value ("6% grade") whether the road climbs or descends.
