How to Calculate Test Grades

Enter the total number of questions on your test and how many you answered incorrectly. The calculator computes your score as a percentage, fraction, and letter grade using the standard US grading scale.

The Formula

Percentage = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100

Example: On a 35-question test with 4 wrong answers, you got 31 correct. Score = (31 ÷ 35) × 100 = 88.57%, which is a B+.

Standard US Grading Scale

  • A+ (97–100%): Exceptional performance
  • A (93–96%): Excellent
  • A- (90–92%): Very good
  • B+ (87–89%): Good
  • B (83–86%): Above average
  • B- (80–82%): Slightly above average
  • C+ (77–79%): Average
  • C (73–76%): Satisfactory
  • C- (70–72%): Below average
  • D+ (67–69%): Below expectations
  • D (63–66%): Poor
  • D- (60–62%): Barely passing
  • F (below 60%): Failing

Understanding Your Score

Percentage Grade

The most universal measure. Your correct answers divided by total questions, times 100. This number is the same regardless of which grading scale your school uses.

Fraction Grade

Shows exactly how many questions you answered correctly out of the total, such as 31/35.

Letter Grade

Maps your percentage to a letter using the standard scale. Note that some schools use different cutoffs (e.g., 70% for a C instead of 73%). Always check your school's policy.

Tips to Improve Test Scores

  • Spaced repetition: Review material at increasing intervals rather than cramming
  • Practice tests: Simulate exam conditions to build recall under pressure
  • Active recall: Test yourself instead of re-reading notes
  • Error analysis: Review wrong answers to understand your weak areas

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the grading scale for letter grades?

On the standard US scale, 90 to 100 percent is an A, 80 to 89 is a B, 70 to 79 is a C, 60 to 69 is a D and below 60 is an F. Plus and minus grades split each band, so 97 to 100 is an A+, 90 to 92 an A- and 87 to 89 a B+. Individual schools may set different cutoffs.

How many questions can you miss on a 40-question test and still pass?

You can miss up to 16 questions on a 40-question test and still pass where the pass mark is 60 percent, because 24 correct answers is exactly 60 percent. To keep an A at 90 percent you can miss only 4 questions, and for a B at 80 percent you can miss 8. Pass marks vary by school and course.

What grade is 27 out of 40?

27 out of 40 is 67.5 percent, which is a D+ on the standard US grading scale and a pass where the pass mark is 60 percent. To work out any score, divide the points earned by the points possible and multiply by 100, so 27 / 40 x 100 = 67.5. A school with a 70 percent pass mark would count it as a fail.

How do I calculate a test grade with weighted questions?

Divide the points earned by the total points possible, not by the number of questions, then multiply by 100. On a test worth 80 points where you earned 68, the grade is 68 / 80 x 100 = 85 percent, a B. Extra credit adds to the points earned without changing the total, so 45 out of 50 plus 3 extra points is 96 percent.
