How to Calculate Time Until an Event

The time until any event is the difference between the target date/time and the current moment. This calculator handles all the math — crossing midnight, month boundaries, and leap years — and shows a live countdown that updates every second.

Manual Method

  1. Convert both times to the same format (24-hour is easiest).
  2. Subtract current time from the target time.
  3. If the target is on a different day, add 24 hours per day difference.
  4. Borrow as needed: 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 day = 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours until midnight?

Subtract the current time from 24:00. At 6:30 PM (18:30) there are 5 hours 30 minutes until midnight, and at 9:15 PM there are 2 hours 45 minutes. Midnight is 12:00 AM, the first moment of the next day, so a countdown to midnight tonight targets the next calendar date at 00:00.

How many days until New Year?

Count the days from today to January 1 at 12:00 AM. From December 1 there are 31 days to go, and from December 25 there are 7. The new year arrives at local midnight, so a New Year countdown in London reaches zero 5 hours before the same countdown in New York.

Does a countdown use local time or UTC?

A countdown to a date and time uses the local time zone of the device showing it. Two people counting down to 9:00 AM on the same date will hit zero at different moments if they live in different time zones. For a shared deadline, convert it into each local time first, or state the time in UTC.

What is the difference between a timer and a countdown?

A timer measures elapsed time going forward from a starting point. A countdown measures the time remaining until a fixed future target, such as a launch, a deadline or a holiday. Once a countdown target passes, the same difference becomes elapsed time, so a countdown can also show how long ago a moment happened.
