How to Convert Decimal Inches to Fractions

Rulers and tape measures in the US use fractional inches — halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths — rather than decimals. Converting between the two is a core skill in woodworking, machining, and construction.

The Conversion Method

  1. Choose your denominator based on the precision you need (8, 16, 32, or 64).
  2. Multiply the decimal by the denominator. Example: 0.3125 × 16 = 5.
  3. Use the result as the numerator: 5/16".
  4. Simplify if possible. If both numerator and denominator are even, divide both by 2.

Reading a Ruler

Standard US rulers divide each inch into 16 equal parts. The marks decrease in length as the fraction gets smaller:

  • Longest mark (besides the inch) = 1/2"
  • Next longest = 1/4" and 3/4"
  • Shorter = eighths (1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8)
  • Shortest = sixteenths

Precision measuring tools like calipers may mark to 1/32" or 1/64".

Inches to Metric Conversion

Since 1959, the international inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters. This makes conversions exact:

  • Inches to mm: multiply by 25.4
  • Inches to cm: multiply by 2.54
  • Inches to meters: multiply by 0.0254
  • Inches to feet: divide by 12

When to Use Which Precision

  • 1/8": Rough carpentry, framing, drywall
  • 1/16": Finish carpentry, cabinetmaking, most woodworking
  • 1/32": Fine woodworking, metal fabrication
  • 1/64": Precision machining, engineering tolerances
  • 1/128": Ultra-precision work, scientific instruments

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 0.375 as a fraction of an inch?

0.375 inch is 3/8 inch. To convert any decimal, multiply it by a power-of-2 denominator such as 8, 16 or 64, round to a whole number, and simplify: 0.375 x 8 = 3, giving 3/8. Decimals that do not land exactly, such as 0.3, round to the nearest available fraction, so finer precision means less error.

How many millimeters is 3/8 inch?

3/8 inch is 9.525 millimeters. One inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters, so convert the fraction to a decimal and multiply: 0.375 x 25.4 = 9.525 mm. The same rule gives 1/4 inch = 6.35 mm and 1/2 inch = 12.7 mm. To go from millimeters to inches, divide by 25.4.

How do I convert centimeters to inch fractions?

Divide centimeters by 2.54 to get decimal inches, then round to the nearest fraction. For example, 9.5 cm / 2.54 = about 3.74 inches, which rounds to 3 3/4 inches at 1/4 or 1/16 inch precision. For finer work, keep the decimal and round to 1/32 or 1/64 inch instead.

What fraction precision does a tape measure show?

Most US tape measures mark to 1/16 inch. Precision trade tapes show 1/32 inch, and machinist rules commonly include 1/64 inch markings. General woodworking works to 1/16 inch, rough carpentry to 1/8 inch, and machining to 1/32 or 1/64 inch, so round conversions to the precision of the tool being used.
