How Currency Conversion Works

Currency conversion uses exchange rates to determine how much one currency is worth in terms of another. The formula is:

Converted Amount = Amount × Exchange Rate

Exchange rates fluctuate based on supply and demand in the foreign exchange (forex) market, influenced by interest rates, inflation, trade balances, and political stability.

Exchange Rate Types

  • Mid-market rate: The true exchange rate midpoint between buy and sell. This is what you see on Google or financial sites
  • Buy rate: The rate a dealer will pay to buy currency from you (lower than mid-market)
  • Sell rate: The rate a dealer charges to sell currency to you (higher than mid-market)
  • Spread: The difference between buy and sell rates — this is the dealer's profit

Tips for Getting Better Exchange Rates

  • Avoid airport exchanges: Airport kiosks typically have the worst rates with 5-10% markups
  • Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card: Cards like Chase Sapphire or Capital One Venture charge 0% foreign transaction fees and use near mid-market rates
  • Withdraw from ATMs abroad: Usually better rates than exchange counters, though watch for ATM fees
  • Compare providers: Online services like Wise (TransferWise) often offer rates much closer to mid-market than traditional banks
  • Avoid dynamic currency conversion: When a merchant offers to charge you in your home currency, they add a markup. Always pay in the local currency

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mid-market exchange rate?

The mid-market rate, also called the interbank rate, is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices for a currency on global markets. It is the fairest reference rate and is the one quoted in most search results and news, but retail customers rarely get it; banks and exchange services add a markup.

Why is the bank exchange rate different from the mid-market rate?

Banks, card issuers and exchange counters add a markup, called the spread, on top of the mid-market rate. The rate a customer actually receives is typically 1 to 5 percent worse depending on the provider. Comparing the quoted rate with the mid-market rate shows how much the conversion really costs.

Why do exchange rates change during the day?

Currency markets trade 24 hours a day, so rates move constantly with economic data releases, central bank decisions, trade flows and investor sentiment. A rate from the morning can differ meaningfully from one in the afternoon. Reference rates published once a day are a snapshot, not a live price.

What is a cross rate in currency exchange?

A cross rate is an exchange rate between two currencies that does not involve the US dollar, such as GBP to JPY. In practice many providers route the trade through USD, converting GBP to USD and then USD to JPY, so two separate spreads can apply to one conversion.
