How to Calculate Electricity Cost

The formula is straightforward: convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by hours of use, then multiply by your electricity rate.

Cost = (Watts ÷ 1,000) × Hours × Price per kWh

Example

A 1,500W space heater running 6 hours per day at $0.16/kWh:

  • Power: 1,500W ÷ 1,000 = 1.5 kW
  • Daily: 1.5 × 6 = 9 kWh × $0.16 = $1.44/day
  • Monthly: 9 × 30 = 270 kWh × $0.16 = $43.20/month
  • Yearly: 9 × 365 = 3,285 kWh × $0.16 = $525.60/year

Tips to Reduce Electricity Costs

  • Switch to LED: LED bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent — a 10W LED replaces a 60W bulb
  • Use smart power strips: Eliminate "phantom load" from devices on standby (TVs, chargers, game consoles)
  • Adjust thermostat: Each degree of AC cooling adds ~3% to your cooling bill
  • Run appliances off-peak: Many utilities offer lower rates during off-peak hours (nights, weekends)
  • Upgrade old appliances: ENERGY STAR appliances use 10-50% less energy than standard models
  • Air seal your home: Sealing drafts reduces heating/cooling costs by 10-20%

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to run a 1,500 watt heater?

A 1,500 watt heater running 6 hours a day at $0.16 per kWh costs about $1.44 a day, or about $43 a month. The formula is cost = power in kW x hours used x price per kWh, so 1.5 x 6 x 0.16 = $1.44. Heaters with a thermostat cycle off, so their real cost is often lower.

What is a kWh?

A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the energy a 1,000 watt appliance uses in 1 hour, and it is the unit an electric bill charges for. A 100 watt bulb takes 10 hours to use 1 kWh, while a 2,000 watt appliance uses 1 kWh in 30 minutes. Multiply kWh by the rate per kWh to get cost.

What is the average electricity price per kWh in the US?

The US average residential electricity price is about $0.16 per kWh. Rates vary widely by state, from about $0.10 in states such as Louisiana to $0.35 or more in Hawaii and California. The exact rate appears on a monthly electric bill, often split into a supply charge and a delivery charge per kWh.

How much does it cost to leave a device on all year?

A year has 8,760 hours, so annual kWh = watts x 8,760 / 1,000. A 12 watt router left on all the time uses about 105 kWh a year, about $17 at $0.16 per kWh. Devices in standby often draw 1 to 5 watts each, and many of them together add a measurable amount to a bill.
